Carl Vandyk: A Famous Photographer
Carl Vandyk opened his first photography studio in London in 1882. It was located on Gloucester Road. Later, in 1901, his studio moved to Buckingham Palace Road, which is very close to Buckingham Palace itself! This location was perfect for photographing royalty and other important people. Carl Vandyk became a British citizen on February 4, 1886.
The Family Business Continues
Carl's son, Herbert Vandyk (1879–1943), also became a photographer. He took over the family business in 1913. Herbert had studied photography in big cities like London, Berlin, and Paris. Under his leadership, the studio earned 22 "Royal Warrants." A Royal Warrant means that the business supplied goods or services to the Royal Family, which is a very special honor!
Carl Vandyk's Hotels
Besides his photography business, Carl Vandyk also owned three hotels in London. These hotels were conveniently located near his photography studios. They included:
- The Rembrandt Hotel, in Thurloe Place
- The Rubens Hotel, on Buckingham Palace Road
- The Vandyke Hotel, on Cromwell Road
Other Photographers in the Family
Carl Vandyk wasn't the only photographer in his family. His two brothers, Aaron Vandyke (1843–1892) and Herman Vandyke (1838–1919), were also photographers. Aaron had studios in Liverpool, and Herman worked in West London. It seems photography was a real family talent!
