Carles Lalueza Fox (born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1965) is a Spanish biologist. He is an expert in studying very old DNA. This DNA comes from things like ancient bones or fossils. He helps us learn about life from long, long ago.

He earned his biology degree from the University of Barcelona. He then worked in famous places like Cambridge and Oxford in the UK. He also worked for a genetics company in Iceland called CODE Genetics. Since 2008, he has been a research scientist. He works at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology. This institute is a partnership between CSIC and Pompeu Fabra University.

What Carles Lalueza Fox Studies

Carles Lalueza Fox is very good at several things. He can get DNA from ancient remains. He also helps figure out how extinct species are related. He studies how human groups moved around in the past. He is also an expert in the genetics of Neanderthals.

In 2010, the magazine Science published an important study. This study showed for the first time that modern humans (Homo sapiens) have some Neanderthal DNA. Carles Lalueza Fox was one of about fifty scientists who worked on this project.

Lalueza-Fox also led another big project in 2014. His team was the first to sequence a European Mesolithic genome. The Mesolithic period was a time in history after the Ice Age. His team found that this ancient person had dark skin. This skin color was similar to people from Africa. But, this person also had blue eyes. Blue eyes are now common in people from northern Europe.

Awards and Honours

Carles Lalueza Fox has received many awards for his work. These awards recognize his important contributions to science. They also honor his efforts to share science with others.

  • In 2001, he won the VII European Prize for Scientific Dissemination. This was for his book "Razas, racismo y diversidad".
  • In 2002, he won the VII prize for Scientific Literature. This was for his book "El color bajo la piel".
  • In 2005, he won the first international essay prize Esteban de Terreros. This was for his book "Genes de Neandertal".
  • Also in 2005, he won the XVIII prize Prismas House of Science. This was for his book "Cuando éramos caníbales".
  • In 2007, he received the City of Barcelona Award for Scientific Research.
