Sir Carleton George Langley (born May 21, 1885, died November 11, 1963) was an important British lawyer and judge. He worked in different parts of the British Empire. From 1940 to 1948, he was the main judge, called the Chief Justice, in a place then known as British Honduras.

Early Life and Military Service

Carleton Langley grew up in Shepton Mallet, England. He went to the City of London School to study. In 1913, he became a lawyer, which is called being "called to the Bar."

During the First World War, from 1914 to 1921, he served in the army. He was a Captain in the London Regiment. He served in places like Malta, France, and Ireland.

Legal Career in the Colonies

After the war, in 1921, Langley returned to being a lawyer. He worked for himself, first in London, then in the Bahamas. In 1931, he got a big job as the Attorney-General of the Leeward Islands. An Attorney-General is the chief legal advisor to the government.

He also became a "King's Counsel" in 1935. This is a special title for experienced lawyers. For a time, he also helped run the government as the Acting Colonial Secretary. He was also the Administrator of Antigua for a year.

In 1937, he became a judge in British Guiana. Then, in 1940, he was chosen to be the Chief Justice of British Honduras. This meant he was the highest judge in that country. He worked there until he retired in 1948. In 1946, he was made a knight, which means he was given the title "Sir."

After retiring and returning to England, Sir Carleton Langley continued to work in the legal field. He became a Commissioner in a special court division.

Sir Carleton Langley was married to Mary, and they had one daughter. He passed away in 1963.
