Carlo Mattrel (born April 14, 1937 – died September 25, 1976) was a talented Italian footballer. He played as a goalkeeper, which means he protected the goal from the other team's shots. Many people thought he was one of the best goalkeepers in Italy during his time.
He had a very successful career playing for different Italian clubs. His most famous time was with Juventus. He also played for the Italy national football team in the 1962 FIFA World Cup.

Playing for Clubs
Carlo Mattrel played for Juventus for most of his career. This was between 1955 and 1965. During this time, he had two short periods where he played for other teams on loan. These teams were Anconitana and Palermo.
While playing for Juventus, he helped the team win many important titles.
- He won the Serie A league title three times: in the 1957–58, 1959–60, and 1960–61 seasons.
- He also won the Coppa Italia (Italy's main cup competition) three times: in 1959, 1960, and 1965.
After leaving Juventus, he played for Cagliari for two seasons. Then, he played one final season with SPAL before he stopped playing football in 1968.

Carlo Mattrel played for the Italy national football team. His first game for Italy was on May 13, 1962. Italy won that game 3–1 against Belgium.
He was also chosen to be part of the Italy team for the 1962 FIFA World Cup. At first, he was a back-up goalkeeper. However, he got to play in a very famous group match against the host country, Chile. This game, played on June 2, is known as the "Battle of Santiago". Italy lost this game and was knocked out of the tournament early.
How He Played
Carlo Mattrel was known as one of the best Italian goalkeepers of his time. He was a very serious and hard-working player. He was also very disciplined and good at organizing his team's defense.
Even though he wasn't the strongest or most acrobatic goalkeeper, he had many strengths. He was excellent at stopping shots from going into the goal. He also had a great sense of where to be on the field. He was quick when he needed to rush out of his goal to challenge an attacker. He was also good at understanding the game and what the other team was trying to do. Despite being tall and thin, he was very agile.
After Football
After he stopped playing football, Carlo Mattrel became a building contractor. Sadly, he passed away in 1976 at the age of 39. His death was due to a road accident.
