Carlos Armando Biebrich Torres (born November 19, 1939 – died January 14, 2021) was an important Mexican lawyer and politician. He was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party. He served as the Governor of Sonora from 1973 to 1975.

Early Life and Education

Carlos Armando Biebrich Torres was born on November 19, 1939. His hometown was Sahuaripa, which is in the state of Sonora, Mexico. He later became a lawyer.

Starting His Political Career

Before he turned 30, Carlos Biebrich began his career in government. He worked as a subsecretary for the Secretariat of the Interior. This was under President Luis Echeverría Álvarez.

Serving as Governor of Sonora

Biebrich became the Governor of Sonora in 1973. He held this important position until 1975. During his time as governor, there was a disagreement over land. In October 1975, a group of Yaqui farmers wanted to reclaim land. They believed this land had been taken from them unfairly.

Governor Biebrich ordered action regarding the land. After this, he decided to resign from his role as governor. The situation was looked into, and he was cleared of any wrongdoing. Later, President Echeverría made a decision about the land. He officially returned the land to the Yaqui farmers.

Roles in the Mexican Congress

Carlos Biebrich also served as a deputy. A deputy is like a representative in the Mexican Congress. He represented the state of Sonora. He served in the XLVII Legislature (1964-1967). He also served in the LX Legislature (2006-2009).

Involvement with the PRI Party

In 2002, he was part of the Executive Committee for the PRI Party (Mexico).svg PRI. This is a leadership group within the political party. He worked under the leadership of Roberto Madrazo Pintado.

Later Years and Passing

Carlos Biebrich passed away on January 14, 2021. He died from COVID-19. This happened in Hermosillo, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico.
