Carlos Román Delgado Chalbaud Gómez (born January 20, 1909 – died November 13, 1950) was a Venezuelan military officer. He became the President of Venezuela from 1948 to 1950. He led the country as part of a military group called a junta.

In 1945, he was one of the officers who helped the Democratic Action political party come to power. This happened through a sudden takeover of the government, known as a coup d'état. Later, in 1948, as the Minister of Defense, he led another military takeover. He then served as president until he was assassinated in Caracas.

Early Life and Education

Carlos Delgado Chalbaud was born in Caracas, Venezuela. His father was Román Delgado Chalbaud. Carlos used his father's last name to honor him.

When he was 20, Carlos was part of a plan to overthrow the leader Juan Vicente Gomez. This plan involved a ship called Falke [es] landing in Cumaná in 1929. The plan failed, and his father, who was leading the group, was killed. After this, Carlos went to France.

Carlos spent many years in Paris. There, he studied engineering. He also attended the famous Saint-Cyr Military Academy, which is a military school. He returned to Venezuela in 1939. President General Eleazar Lopez Contreras quickly made him a captain in the Venezuelan army.

Military and Political Career

Carlos Delgado Chalbaud was known as a very smart officer. In 1945, he was part of a group that removed President Isaías Medina Angarita from power. After this, Carlos became a member of the new government, called the Revolutionary Junta.

He served as the Minister of Defense. This was during the presidencies of Rómulo Betancourt and Rómulo Gallegos.

In 1948, Carlos was again involved in a change of government. He helped to overthrow President Gallegos. He then became a member of the Military Junta of Government. This group of three leaders included Marcos Pérez Jiménez and Luis Llovera Páez. Carlos Delgado Chalbaud was the main leader of this group.

Death

Carlos Delgado Chalbaud was kidnapped and murdered on November 13, 1950. A group led by Rafael Simón Urbina and his nephew Domingo Urbina carried out the act. The kidnapping happened in Caracas. His murder took place in the Las Mercedes neighborhood.

It seems his death was an accident during a failed kidnapping attempt. Urbina wanted to overthrow Delgado Chalbaud's presidency. Some people believe Urbina disliked Delgado Chalbaud. Others think they were friends until they disagreed about politics. The day after Urbina was captured, he was also killed. This helped Marcos Pérez Jiménez become the most powerful leader in Venezuela for several years.

Personal Life

Carlos Delgado Chalbaud was married to Lucía Devine. She was the First Lady of Venezuela from 1948 to 1950.

A mountain in Venezuela's Amazonas state is named after him. It is called Cerro Carlos Delgado Chalbaud. This mountain is where the Orinoco River begins.
