Carlotta Berry is an amazing American professor who works in engineering. She teaches electrical and computer engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. She also helps lead a program called ROSE-BUD, which encourages more students from different backgrounds to study engineering. Dr. Berry also helped start two important groups: Black In Engineering and Black In Robotics. These groups support Black people in engineering and robotics.

Carlotta Berry's Early Life and Education

Carlotta Berry studied a lot when she was younger. In 1992, she earned a bachelor's degree in math. The next year, in 1993, she got another bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. She earned these degrees through a special program between Spelman College and Georgia Tech.

While at Georgia Tech, she noticed that there were not many women or African-American students and teachers in engineering. This made her want to become an engineering professor herself. She hoped to inspire more people from different backgrounds to join the field.

After college, she worked in the industry to pay off her student loans. At the same time, she studied for her master's degree at Wayne State University. She finished her master's in control systems in 1996. A year later, she left her job to get her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University.

At Vanderbilt, Dr. Berry was part of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory (IRL). She worked with her advisors, Kazuhiko Kawamura and Julie Adams. Her Ph.D. project was about making it easier for people to control mobile robots. She focused on improving how people could see what the robot was "thinking" or remembering.

Carlotta Berry's Career and Research

Dr. Berry is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. She loves teaching about robots that can move, how people and robots work together, and how to get more diverse students into engineering.

In 2008, Dr. Berry and her friend Deborah Walter started the ROSE-BUD program. This program helps talented female students and students from underrepresented groups. It offers scholarships and other activities to encourage them to study computer science and different types of engineering.

Dr. Berry also worked with other teachers at Rose-Hulman to create a new minor degree in robotics. This program combines different subjects to teach students about robots. She is still a co-director for this exciting program.

She has also been a guest speaker at many events that encourage women in engineering. Dr. Berry has written articles for important magazines like the New York Times and ASEE Prism. In these articles, she shares her experiences as a professor from an underrepresented group.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Berry has won many awards for her work in making STEM fields more diverse. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Some of her awards include the Women and Hi Tech Leading Light award and the INSIGHT Into Diversity Inspiring Women in STEM award.

In 2020, she was named an Indiana FIRST Game Changer. She was also recognized as one of "30 women in Robotics You need to Know about." She also received the Reinvented Magazine Interview of the Year award for her focus on purpose and passion.

In 2021, Dr. Berry was given the Dr. Lawrence J. Giacoletto Endowed Chair for Electrical and Computer Engineering. This is a special honor for a professor. She also received the TechPoint Foundation for Youth Bridge Builder award.

In June 2021, she was named a Distinguished Fellow by the American Society for Engineering Education. She also became an IEEE Senior Fellow. In 2022, she received many more honors. These included the 2023 IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Society of Women Engineers 2022 Distinguished Engineering Educator Award. She also won the 2022 Distinguished Educator Award from the American Society of Engineering Education Electrical and Computer Engineering Division. Plus, she was named a 2022 Open Source Hardware Trailblazer Fellow.

In 2023, Dr. Berry received the Abie Educational Innovation Award from AnitaB.org. This award was given at the Grace Hopper Celebration in Orlando, Florida. In 2024, she was featured on the Forbes 50 Over 50 innovation list. Also in 2024, she was named the IEEE Education Society Distinguished Lecturer. She also became a Visiting Scientist at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis.
