Carlotta Hall was born in Kingsville, Ohio, in 1880. Her parents were Adelaide Percy (Hardy) Case and Quincy A. Case. She went to the University of California, Berkeley. There, she studied botany, which is the study of plants. She earned her degree in 1904. In 1910, she married another botanist named Harvey Monroe Hall. They had a daughter named Martha in 1916.

Carlotta's Work as a Botanist

Carlotta Hall became very skilled at collecting ferns. She also worked as an assistant professor of botany at the University of California, Berkeley. This meant she taught students about plants. She wrote books and articles about ferns found along the Pacific Coast.

One of her most famous works was a book called A Yosemite Nature. She wrote this book in 1912 with her husband. It was a small, easy-to-carry guide to the plants in Yosemite National Park. The book described over 900 different types of plants. It helped people identify plants they saw in the park.

Honors and Legacy

Carlotta Hall was a member of the California Academy of Sciences. This is a well-known scientific organization. She was also a special member of several science groups in Europe.

A type of California fern was named in her honor. It is called the tufted lacefern, or Carlotta Hall's lace fern (Aspidotis carlotta-halliae). This shows how important her work was in the world of botany.

Her important papers and notes, along with those of her husband and daughter, are kept at the University of California, Berkeley.
