Carme Vilà i Fassier (born in 1937) is a talented Spanish pianist from Catalonia. She is known for her amazing piano skills and for leading the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona as its director from 1997 to 2001.

Biography

Early Life and Studies

Carme Vilà was born in Roses, a town in Girona, Spain. Music was in her family, as she was the fourth generation of pianists! She started playing the piano when she was just four years old, learning from Emilia Palau.

At the age of 12, Carme joined the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona. She was a brilliant student and graduated at 16 with the highest grades. She also won special Silver and Gold medals for her achievements.

International Career

After her studies in Spain, Carme continued to learn from famous musicians around the world. At 17, she studied with Béla Síki in Switzerland. She even became a finalist in the Geneva International Piano Competition in both 1953 and 1955.

In 1959, she went to the Musik Hochschule in Vienna, Austria. There, she studied with Professor Richard Hauser and won the Haydn-Schubert International Competition. In 1961, she earned a special diploma from the Musik Akademie in Vienna with top honors.

Carme also had the chance to study with other legendary pianists like Alfred Brendel, Paul Badura-Skoda, and Jörg Demus. She received an amazing prize in 1962 from the Chigiana Academy of Siena, where she took courses with Alfred Cortot and Guido Agosti. In 1966, she was awarded the Harriet Cohen Medal in London.

Teaching and Leadership

From 1967 to 1972, Carme Vilà worked in the United States. She was an assistant to Paul Badura-Skoda and a resident artist at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside. The university even gave her an honorary doctor's degree! During this time, she performed many concerts in South America with the violinist Ruggiero Ricci.

Carme returned to Spain in 1977. She became a professor at the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona. Later, from 1997 to 2001, she became the director of the Conservatory, helping to guide young musicians.
