Carmen Calvo Sáenz de Tejada (born in 1950) is a famous Spanish artist. She is known for her unique style of art, often called conceptual art. Her work has made a big impact on modern art in the Valencian Community in Spain.

About Carmen Calvo

Carmen Calvo was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1950. When she was young, she worked in a factory that made ceramic items. This experience later inspired her art, which often includes pieces of pottery and clay.

She studied advertising and then went to art schools in Valencia from 1965 to 1972. Carmen had her first art show in Valencia in 1976. Her second show was in Madrid in 1977.

From 1983 to 1985, she lived in Madrid. In 1985, she received a special scholarship and moved to Paris, France. She stayed there until 1992. Since then, she has lived and worked in Valencia.

Her Art and Career

Carmen Calvo admires many famous artists like Giotto and Joan Miró. Early in her career, she started using terracotta (a type of clay) in her art. This material became a very important part of her work. Besides painting, Carmen is also known for creating art installations in public buildings.

In the 1980s, she received several awards and scholarships for her art. In 1980, she was one of only nine artists chosen to show their work at the New images from Spain exhibition. This important show was held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1982, she also showed her art at the first-ever ARCO art fair in Madrid.

In 1990, the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern held a special exhibition. It looked back at all of Carmen's artwork since 1973.

In 1995, Carmen Calvo created a large art piece called Lápida-Mural. It was made for the Alboraya-Palmaret Station on the metro Line 3 in Valencia.

In the late 1990s, she began to add photographs to her art. She also created art scenes using installations. These works showed her special way of looking at the world around her.

In 1997, Carmen represented Spain at the Venice Biennale, a very famous art event. She showed a gallery of mirrors there. In 2003, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía held a big exhibition about her work. From December 2016 to January 2017, her exhibition Carmen Calvo. Todo procede de la sinrazón (1969–2016) was shown in Madrid.

In 2013, she received the National Award for Plastic Arts. This is a very important award from Spain's Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports. In 2014, she became a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia.

She also took part in the 2018 PHotoEspaña Festival with her exhibition Quietud y vertigo.

Carmen Calvo's art often includes themes about feminism. In March 2019, she and another artist, Carla Fuentes, received the Carmen Alborch Award. They got this award for their contributions to culture and feminism.
