Carmen Possnig (born 1988) is an amazing Austrian doctor and a future space explorer. She is a reserve astronaut for the European Space Agency (ESA). After finishing her medical studies in 2014, Carmen worked as a doctor in Vienna. Later, she spent over a year in Antarctica doing important research. Since 2020, she has been studying how the human body reacts to space. In 2022, she was chosen to be a reserve astronaut.

Carmen's Early Life and School

Carmen Possnig was born in 1988 in Klagenfurt, Austria. She went to the Medical University of Graz. In 2014, she finished her studies there. Her final project was about how artificial gravity affects people. She worked on this with the German Aerospace Center.

Her Medical Adventures

From 2014 to 2017, Carmen worked as a doctor in Vienna. She earned a special diploma for general practice.

In 2017, she went on an incredible journey to Concordia Station in Antarctica. She stayed there for 13 months! As a research doctor, she led the medical rescue team. She also studied how people's bodies change in extreme cold. This research was for the European Space Agency.

Carmen even wrote a book about her time in Antarctica. It's called "Südlich vom Ende der Welt," which means "South of the End of the World." It was published in 2020.

Since 2020, she has been studying for her PhD at the University of Innsbruck. Her research focuses on space physiology. This is about how our bodies work in space. In 2022, she also became a research doctor in France. She works at the Medes Institute for Space Medicine.

Becoming an Astronaut

In 2022, the European Space Agency picked Carmen Possnig as a reserve astronaut. This means she is ready to train for space missions. More than 22,500 people applied to be part of this new group of astronauts. If Carmen gets to go to space, she will be the first Austrian woman to do so!
