Building History
Early Years and Name Changes
The building was first known as the Wynne-Claughton Building. It was built in the 1920s. It served as the main office for the Wynne-Claughton Company. This was a real estate company in Atlanta. Morgan T. Wynne and Edward N. Claughton started it in 1923.
Construction of the building began on July 3, 1924. It was finished on April 11, 1925. The building's architect was G. Lloyd Preacher. He was a famous architect in Atlanta. He designed many historic buildings there. These include Atlanta City Hall and the Medical Arts Building. After the building was done, Preacher moved his own office into it.
In 1929, the building's name changed. It became the Mortgage Guaranty Building. Then, in 1963, it got its current name: the Carnegie Building. This new name might have been inspired by the Carnegie Library. That library was located right across the street.
Location and Nearby Landmarks

The Carnegie Building is on a unique piece of land. It is shaped like a triangle. This land is bordered by Peachtree Street, Carnegie Way, and Ellis Street. The building shares this space with the Peachtree Center station and the Ellis Hotel. The Ellis Hotel was once known as the Winecoff Hotel.
In 1946, a big fire happened at the Winecoff Hotel. Some people trapped in the hotel tried to escape. They attempted to jump across the narrow space to the Carnegie Building. Others managed to cross using makeshift bridges.
Recent Changes and Current Use
In 1992, a company bought the building. They spent $2.5 million to renovate it. In 2006, a large law firm moved out. This left many offices empty.
Because of this, the owners decided to change the building's purpose. They turned it into a boutique hotel. On May 1, 2010, a Hotel Indigo opened there. Today, the building houses a Courtyard by Marriott hotel.
