Carneiro's Past: A Look Back
Carneiro has an interesting history, especially because of its connection to trains.
The Railroad Connection
Long ago, Carneiro was an important stop on the Union Pacific Railroad line. This meant it was a "station" where trains would stop. It was also a "shipping point," which means goods and products were loaded onto trains here to be sent to other places. This was a big deal for small communities back then.
The Story of the Post Office
Carneiro also had its own post office for many years. The first post office opened in 1872 and was called Alum Creek. Later, in 1882, its name was changed to Carneiro. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages. It stayed open for a long time, finally closing its doors in 1953.
One person who worked at the Carneiro post office was Ernest Oakley Cunningham. He was the Post Master there. Later, he became the Post Master in another Kansas town called Langley. Mr. Cunningham moved to Ellsworth County in 1870 when he was just 15 years old. When he passed away, he was known as one of the oldest pioneers, or early settlers, still living in Ellsworth County.
Learning in Carneiro
Even though Carneiro is a small community, it's part of a larger school system. Students in Carneiro are served by the Ellsworth USD 327 public school district. This district provides education for children in the area.
