The History of Carolina

Carolina was founded by a man named Elzy Henderson Garvin. He came from Wagener, South Carolina. South Carolina had faced a very bad drought (a long period with no rain).

Around that time, missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as Mormons) visited the area. Many members of the Garvin family decided to join the Mormon faith.

Elzy Garvin left South Carolina to find better land for farming. He also sought a better climate. And he wanted a place where his family could practice their faith freely. He once said that his family left Ireland to practice their faith, and they would not change.

The new area reminded him so much of his home state that he named it "Carolina." Elzy was married to Emma Catherine Bass. They had five children: Sherman, Ollie, Nancy, Willia, and Odessa. Both Elzy and Emma are buried in Carolina. Many of his relatives are buried at Bethcar Baptist Church in South Carolina.
