Building Amazing Projects

Starting Her Career

Caroline Bos first worked as a journalist. She wrote with Ben van Berkel for magazines like Forum (1985–86) and "Diagram Works" (1988).

In 1988, Bos and van Berkel started their own architecture company in Amsterdam. It was called Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau. This company designed many well-known buildings in the Netherlands.

Creating UNStudio

In 1998, they changed the company's name to UNStudio. They removed their own names because they believe architecture is a team effort. UNStudio is known for using new ideas and knowledge in its designs.

The company has many experts in architecture, city planning, and building roads or bridges. Caroline Bos works closely with everyone on a project. She makes sure they are all working towards the best ideas.

Teamwork and "Deep Planning"

UNStudio believes in working together to build big, challenging projects. They call their special way of planning "deep planning." This means they think about the neighborhood and surrounding areas when designing a new building.

Caroline Bos believes that building is a team effort. She says that architects are just one part of a big process. People have even called her UNStudio's "secret weapon." This is because she wasn't trained as a designer. Her fresh ideas help the team think differently.

Major Projects and Teaching

By 2012, UNStudio had 153 staff members from 17 countries. They had finished 69 projects, and Caroline Bos was involved in all of them. In the beginning, they often entered design competitions. This helped them get work as a new company.

Some of the big projects Caroline Bos worked on include:

  • The Prince Claus Bridge in Utrecht, Netherlands.
  • The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

Caroline Bos has also taught at many places. These include the Academy of Architecture in Arnhem and Liverpool University. She has also taught at Princeton University with Ben van Berkel. In 2012, she became an Honorary Professor at the University of Melbourne.

New Ideas in Architecture

Caroline Bos likes to challenge old ideas about architecture. Early in her career, she compared architecture to fashion. She said architects "dress the future." She also thinks it's important for buildings to fit well into cities. They should also work for all the different people who will use them.

She believes that urban planning is very important. She says that she and Ben van Berkel always wanted to build real buildings, not just create theories.

Who Inspired Caroline Bos?

Caroline Bos says she has been inspired by many famous architects. She likes Renaissance and Baroque architects like Filippo Brunelleschi. She also admires Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Another architect who inspired her is the 20th-century Dutch architect, Aldo van Eyck.
