A Look Back in Time: History of Utrecht University
Utrecht University officially opened on March 26, 1636. It grew from a school that started two years earlier. A famous professor named Gisbertus Voetius gave the first speech. Bernardus Schotanus became the university's first leader.
At first, only a few dozen students attended classes. Seven professors taught in four main areas. These were philosophy, theology, medicine, and law. Anna Maria van Schurman was the first female student at the university.
The university grew quickly in the 1600s. It helped the Netherlands during its "Golden Age." A botanical garden was built, and later an observatory for studying stars. Many students came from other countries, like Germany and England. They learned from famous thinkers like René Descartes.
In 1806, during a time when the French ruled the Netherlands, Utrecht University was made into a high school. But in 1813, it became a university again. Utrecht was one of only three universities left in the Netherlands after some areas became part of Belgium.
Around 1850, a group of scientists at Utrecht University became very important. They created special labs where students could learn by doing experiments. In 1918, a school for animal doctors became part of the university.
As the university got bigger, it needed more space. So, in the 1960s, many parts of the university moved. They went to a new campus called Utrecht Science Park De Uithof. However, some university buildings are still in the old city center.
