Early Life and Education
Caroline Costello studied Classics and History at University College Dublin. She earned her degree in 1982. After that, she continued her studies at the University of Oxford and King's Inns. King's Inns is a special place in Ireland where people train to become barristers.
Becoming a Lawyer
In 1988, Caroline Costello became a barrister. A barrister is a type of lawyer who represents people in court. She became a senior counsel in 2010. This means she was a very experienced and respected barrister. Her work mainly involved helping businesses with legal issues. This included laws about trade, banks, and companies that were having financial problems.
Judicial Career
Caroline Costello has had a distinguished career as a judge in Ireland. She has served in two of the country's highest courts.
High Court Judge
She was first appointed as a Judge of the High Court in September 2014. The High Court deals with serious legal cases. While there, she handled important bankruptcy cases. She also led the judicial part of INSOL Europe, which is a group for lawyers who deal with financial difficulties. In 2018, she sent a question to the Court of Justice of the European Union. This question was about a case involving data privacy rules between the EU and the US.
Court of Appeal Judge
In November 2018, Caroline Costello was appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal. This court hears appeals from decisions made in lower courts. Her appointment, along with another judge named Isobel Kennedy, was a big step. It meant that for the first time, an Irish court had an equal number of male and female judges.

Caroline Costello comes from a family with a strong legal and political history. Her father was Declan Costello, who was a former Attorney General of Ireland.
