The Carrie mango is a special type of mango that first grew in south Florida, USA. It's known as a 'cultivar,' which means it's a specific variety of a plant that people have chosen and grown for its unique features.

How the Carrie Mango Started

The very first Carrie mango tree grew in Boynton Beach, Florida. It was on the land of a person named Laurence H. Zill. Scientists believe it might have come from a mango called 'Sophie Fry.' Another study suggests its parent was the 'Julie' mango.

The Carrie mango was named after Laurence Zill's mother, Carrie Zill. The tree first grew fruit in 1940. People started growing it for sale in 1949.

Why Carrie Mangoes Are Special

The Carrie mango quickly became famous for how good it tasted. It was also known for being strong against plant diseases. Even though it didn't have a bright red color and its flesh was soft, many people loved growing it in their own yards in Florida.

Today, you can find Carrie mango trees in important plant collections. These include the USDA's plant bank in Miami, Florida. They are also at the University of Florida's research center and the Miami-Dade Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida. These places help protect and study different plant types.

What Does a Carrie Mango Look Like?

Carrie mangoes are usually small, weighing about a pound or less. They become ripe between June and July in Florida. When they are ready to eat, they can be green or yellow. Unlike some other mangoes, they don't turn red.

The inside of the fruit is orange and has a rich, strong flavor. It's also not stringy or fibrous, which makes it very pleasant to eat. Each fruit has one seed inside. Carrie mangoes are also very good at resisting fungus, which can be a problem for other fruits.

About the Carrie Mango Tree

The trees themselves can grow quite big and strong. However, they tend to grow in a compact, rounded shape. This makes them easier to manage in a garden or yard. Their leaves are also a bit wider than most other mango tree leaves.
