What Was Carter Nine?
Carter Nine was a town built and owned by a company. It was created to house workers for an oil refinery. This refinery was run by the Carter Oil Company. The community even had its own post office, which opened on August 14, 1928.
How Carter Nine Got Its Name
The name "Carter Nine" came from two things. "Carter" was for the Carter Oil Company. "Nine" came from the community's location. It was in Section 9 of Township 26 North, Range 6 East.
Life in the Company Town
When Carter Nine first started, it had fifty houses inside a fenced area. As the community grew in the 1920s, another 50 private homes were built outside the fence.
The community had many important places for its residents:
- A school with eight teachers.
- Its own post office.
- A general store where people could buy things.
- A service station for cars.
- Company offices.
- A large plant that made naphtha, a type of oil product.
Why Carter Nine Disappeared
Over time, the oil refinery changed owners. It was first transferred to Skelly Oil Company. Then, it went to Phillips Petroleum Company. The refinery finally closed for good in 1945.
As the refinery shut down, the town began to shrink.
- The high school closed in 1942. After that, students had to go to high school in Shidler.
- By the 1950s, the plant was completely closed. The town was abandoned.
- At its peak, Carter Nine had about 300 houses. When it was abandoned, only 39 houses were left.
- Today, none of the buildings from Carter Nine are still standing.
