Cartí Sugtupu, also known as Gardi Sugdub, is a small island located in the beautiful San Blas Archipelago in Panama. It is part of the Guna Yala region, which is a special area governed by the Guna people themselves. This island is the largest of four nearby islands called Cartí. It sits about 1,200 meters (about three-quarters of a mile) off the northern coast of mainland Panama.

The island is very crowded with homes and buildings. It also has a small harbor for boats and a museum. The people who live here are the Guna people, who are the original inhabitants of this land.

Getting to Cartí Sugtupu

You can reach Cartí Sugtupu by boat from the nearby mainland. There's a place called Cartí on the mainland, and also the Cartí Airport. Both of these are connected to the main road system in Panama.

Exploring the San Blas Islands

From Cartí Sugtupu, you can take a taxi boat to other amazing islands in the San Blas area. These include places like El Porvenir, Cayos Limones, and Cayos Holandeses. Each island offers a unique experience in this stunning part of the world.

Why People Are Moving from Cartí Sugtupu

The people of Cartí Sugtupu are in the process of moving from their island home to the mainland of Panama. This big move is happening because of rising sea levels. The ocean water is slowly rising, which makes life on the low-lying island more difficult and dangerous.

The Move to Nuevo Cartí

As of June 2024, many families have started moving to a new settlement on the mainland called Nuevo Cartí. About 300 families have already made the move. This new place is close to the island, but it's surrounded by forests instead of the sea.

The government of Panama believes that Cartí Sugtupu island could be completely underwater by the year 2050. Several other islands in the San Blas Archipelago are also at risk.

A Big Change for the Guna People

Moving from their island home is a very sad and difficult change for the Guna people. They have lived on Cartí Sugtupu for over 200 years. Their culture and way of life are deeply connected to the sea. Moving to a forested area means a major shift in how they live every day.

This community is considered to be the first in Panama to be displaced, or forced to move, because of climate change. Climate change is a long-term shift in global weather patterns, often leading to things like rising sea levels.
