The Carver Theatre is a famous building in New Orleans, Louisiana. It first opened in 1950. This theater was a busy place. People came to enjoy concerts, plays, and even movies. It also hosted special events like graduations and Mardi Gras balls.

History

The Carver Theatre is named after George Washington Carver. He was a very important scientist. The theater is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special building with a lot of history.

When it was built in 1950, the Carver Theatre was very modern. It was a top-notch place for Black people in New Orleans to enjoy entertainment. For many years, it was a popular movie theater.

In 1980, the Carver Theatre stopped showing movies. It then became an office for housing and a medical clinic.

Later, in 2005, a big storm called Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The theater was badly damaged by about six feet of water. It needed a lot of repairs.

After the hurricane, the building went through a huge renovation. This project cost about $8 million. Workers removed old wood and drywall. They made sure to keep the outside of the building looking original. This included the display windows where movie posters used to be. The Carver Theatre finally reopened in 2014. Today, it is once again a place for live performances.
