Carácuaro de Morelos is a town in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It is the main town for the area around it, known as the Carácuaro municipality.
What's in a Name?
The name "Carácuaro" comes from an old word, carakua, from the Chichimeca language. It means "place of slope" or "place on the slope," which probably describes the town's location. The second part, "Morelos," honors José María Morelos. He was a very important leader during the Mexican War of Independence, helping Mexico become free.
