About Casa Roig
What is the Prairie School Style?
Casa Roig was built in 1920. It shows off a special building style called the Prairie School. This style was popular in the early 1900s. It was known for its flat roofs, wide open spaces, and lines that looked like the flat landscapes of the American prairies. The design of Casa Roig was inspired by famous architects like Louis Sullivan and especially Frank Lloyd Wright.
Inside and Out
The house has a unique cross shape when you look at it from above. It has two main floors and a basement. It's built with strong concrete and wood. Inside, you can see beautiful stained glass windows and colorful mosaics. These details make the house very special and artistic.
From Home to Museum
The Roig family lived in the house until 1956. After that, it stayed empty for many years. On August 13, 1977, Antonio Roig's family gave the house to the University of Puerto Rico. The university decided to fix up and protect this important building.
Architects Otto Reyes and Tom Marvel worked for 10 years to restore Casa Roig. In 1989, the house opened its doors to the public as a museum. Since then, it has been a great example of the Prairie School style adapted for the Caribbean. It also serves as a center for art and culture.
A Historic Landmark
Casa Roig is considered one of the best works by architect Antonin Nechodoma. It is the only house he designed that is still completely standing today. Because of its importance, Casa Roig was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It was also listed on the Puerto Rico Register of Historic Sites and Zones on May 16, 2001.
In September 2017, Hurricane Maria caused some damage to the museum's roof. However, the museum continues to be an important part of Puerto Rico's history and culture.
