Building History
The idea for the Casa Sindical building started in April 1949. A competition was held to find the best design. Two architects, Francisco de Asís Cabrero and Rafael de Aburto, were chosen to work together on the project.
The building was finished in 1951. Some parts of it opened in July 1955. This happened during a big meeting called the III National Congress of Workers. The entire building was officially opened by the Spanish leader at the time, Francisco Franco, on October 27, 1955.
What the Building Looks Like
The Casa Sindical is located right across from the famous Prado Museum in Madrid. It has a tall, central tower made of brick. This tower has 16 floors and stands about 60 meters (nearly 200 feet) tall.
The building's design was very modern for its time. It showed that new styles of architecture were becoming accepted in Spain. Some people have compared its look to the work of an Italian architect named Giuseppe Terragni, who also designed modern buildings.
