The Casa de Cervantes (which means "Cervantes' House" in Spanish) is a special museum in Valladolid, Spain. This building was once the home of the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. He is best known for writing the classic book Don Quixote. It's important not to mix this house up with other places where Cervantes lived, like his birthplace in Alcala de Henares or another museum in Esquivias.
About Cervantes' Home
Valladolid was briefly the capital city of Spain from 1601 to 1606. This was the last time the Spanish Court left Madrid. Because the Court moved, many people came to live in Valladolid. This caused a big demand for new houses. Cervantes' House was built around this time, so it was a new or almost new home.
We know a lot about Cervantes' house in Valladolid, where he lived in 1605. This is because of a surprising event. A nobleman was hurt in the street right in front of Cervantes' house. The injured man was taken inside the house and sadly passed away there.
Because of this, an official investigation took place. Everyone living in the house at the time had to give statements. This information was carefully studied by Luis Astrana Marín. It tells us exactly who lived with Cervantes and where they stayed in the house.
Who Lived with Cervantes?
The museum today is made up of three joined houses. However, Cervantes and his family did not use all three. His mother lived in one room, and the rest of his family lived in another. Their rooms were above a tavern on the ground floor.
Only women were living with Cervantes at that time. They included his wife, Catalina. His very religious sister, Magdalena, was also there. She worked as a seamstress for wealthy gentlemen. His other sister, Andrea, was also a seamstress. Andrea's daughter, Costanza, lived there too. Cervantes' own daughter, Isabel, was also part of the household. Finally, a maid named María lived with them.
The building is very important for its history and culture. It has a special heritage listing called Bien de Interés Cultural. This means it is a "Property of Cultural Value." It has been protected by law since June 9, 1958.
