Cascade Summit, Oregon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cascade Summit is a small, undeveloped area in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. It sits on the west side of Odell Lake, near a place called Shelter Cove. This spot is about 30 miles southeast of Oakridge.

This area became known because of the railroad. It was a key station for the Southern Pacific Railroad's "Cascade Line." This line was finished between 1925 and 1926. The name "Cascade Summit" makes sense because it's just east of a tunnel that goes through the Cascade Mountains.

Railroad History

A post office opened at Cascade Summit in 1927. It served the community until 1980. Today, the railroad line is owned by Union Pacific.

Cascade Summit is the highest point on the railroad's path over the Cascades. It sits at an elevation of about 4,852 feet (1,479 meters). This location was famous for taking photos during the Southern Pacific Railroad's time.

The station at Cascade Summit once had a main building, a siding (a short track for trains to wait), and a wye (a Y-shaped track for turning trains around). From the 1930s to the 1940s, passenger trains stopped here every day. Now, only the siding remains. There was also a building called Cascade Summit Lodge, but it later burned down. Its foundation could still be seen as of 1990.

Climate

The weather in this area has warm, but not hot, and dry summers. The average monthly temperatures do not go above 71.6°F (22°C). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Cascade Summit has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This type of climate is often called "Csb" on climate maps.
