Case Island is a round, ice-covered island. It is located off the coast of Palmer Land in Antarctica. The island is about 22 kilometers (12 nautical miles) wide.
You can find Case Island in Carroll Inlet. It sits between the mainland and Smyley Island.
How Was Case Island Discovered?
The United States Geological Survey mapped Case Island. They used information from surveys. They also used aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy. These photos were taken between 1961 and 1966.
Who Was Case Island Named After?
The name 'Case Island' was suggested by Finn Ronne. He was an explorer.
Ronne named the island after Francis H. Case. Senator Case was a politician. He helped get government support for a ship. This ship was used for the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition. This important trip happened in 1947 and 1948.
