History of Caseyville
How Caseyville Started
A rich man named Charles Harbour built a house and a sawmill in this area in 1845. There was a lot of coal underground nearby. Charles Harbour was part of a group called the Illinois Coal Company. Other members included Zadok Casey, Walter Seates, Malcomb Robinson, Charles Barrett, and John Roy. Zadok Casey was an important person who had worked as a United States Representative (a type of lawmaker) and Lieutenant Governor of Illinois.
Growth of the Village
In 1849, the Illinois Coal Company officially started the town and named it Caseyville, after Zadok Casey. They began mining coal, and in 1851, they built a railroad to a nearby town called Brooklyn. This railroad helped them move the coal easily.
In 1850, only about 40 people lived in Caseyville. By 1851, the population grew to about 150. By 1881, around 800 people called Caseyville home. The first post office opened in 1856. The village officially became a town (it was "incorporated") in May 1869. A school was built in 1872, and a church was built in 1879.
