The Cashtown Inn is an old and famous bed and breakfast. It is located in Cashtown, Pennsylvania. This town is about 8 miles from Gettysburg.

History of the Cashtown Inn

The Cashtown Inn was built a very long time ago, in 1797. The area around it became known as Cashtown. In 1815, the owner, Peter Marck, got a special license. This allowed him to run the inn as a tavern. At first, it had four rooms for guests.

The Inn During the Civil War

During the Gettysburg Campaign, the inn became very important. It was used as a main office for many Confederate officers. Important generals like A. P. Hill, John D. Imboden, and Henry Heth stayed there.

The basement of the inn also served as a hospital. Many injured soldiers were cared for there during the battle.

The Cashtown Inn Today

Today, the Cashtown Inn is still a bed and breakfast. It has four rooms and three special suites. Each room is named after a Confederate general.

In recent years, the inn has become quite famous. This is mostly because of stories about paranormal activity. It was even featured on a TV show called Ghost Hunters. The inn also appeared in the movie Gettysburg. The actor Sam Elliott stayed at the inn while filming the movie.

Is the Cashtown Inn Haunted?

Many guests and ghost tour guides talk about strange things happening at the Cashtown Inn. Some people say a swing on the front porch moves by itself. This happens even when there is no one on it and no wind.

Other guests have heard footsteps running in the hallways. Lights sometimes flicker on and off. People also report hearing strange noises. These noises are often described as men's cries.

Mysterious Happenings

A ghost tour guide named D.E. Pope shared a story. A friend of his often stayed at the inn. This friend had important medicine he needed to take every day. He always put his pills on his nightstand at night. One morning, his pills were gone. He and his wife searched everywhere. They looked under the bed and the nightstand. But the pills were nowhere to be found. To this day, he believes someone or something took them. No one knows if this was a ghost or something else.

Another story comes from Debbie and Mark L. They were staying at the inn one night. They both woke up to a noise. It sounded like someone was trying to open their door. Mark checked the door, but no one was there. They had trouble falling back asleep. Later, Debbie heard the noise again. It was about 4:15 in the morning. She woke Mark up, and they both listened. The noise eventually stopped.

Many people think these noises are from the ghosts of Confederate soldiers. These soldiers may have died during the American Civil War. Because of these stories, Room 5 is very popular. This room used to belong to General Robert E. Lee. It is often booked by people who love ghost stories.
