Caspar Herman Hausmann was an important Danish-Norwegian general. He was also a successful lumber merchant and a landowner. He was born on January 10, 1653, in Segeberg. This place was then part of the Danish duchy of Holsten. He died on September 9, 1718, in Christiania (now Oslo). He is buried in a special crypt in Oslo Cathedral.

Caspar Hausmann was married to Karen Nielsdatter Toller. He was also the half-brother of Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve. Gyldenløve was the acknowledged son of King Frederick III of Denmark. He served as the King's representative, or Statholder, in Norway from 1664 to 1699.

Caspar Hausmann's Military Career

Caspar Hausmann began his military service as a Danish officer. He fought in the Scanian War from 1675 to 1679. During this war, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1678. He was injured when his forces captured Rügen in 1678. In 1679, he was put in charge of the military post at Apen.

In 1680, he moved to Norway to help build up the army there. He was given command of the Akershus national infantry regiment. He continued to rise through the ranks. He became a colonel in 1681 and a Brigadier in 1696. By 1703, he was a major general. In 1711, he became a lieutenant general. He also joined the Slottsloven, a military council at Akershus Fortress.

In 1711, a Norwegian Army was formed. Its goal was to invade and take back Bohuslen, a former Norwegian area. Lieutenant General Caspar Hausmann led this army. A strong navy was supposed to protect and transport the army by sea. King Frederick IV promised to send a fleet in June 1711.

In August, the Norwegian army marched into Bohuslen. However, the navy did not arrive. King Frederick IV had ordered the fleet to return to the Baltic Sea. Without naval support, the Norwegian Army had to go back to Norway.

In April 1712, during the Great Northern War, Hausmann was promoted again. He became the commander-in-chief of the Army in Norway. He held this important position until January 1716. He was known for being skilled and careful. He also made the army very strong and ready for battle. The Norwegian army, which he helped build, successfully stopped Swedish attacks in 1716 and 1718.

Awards and Honors

Caspar Hausmann received a special honor in 1709. He was made a knight in the Order of the Dannebrog. In 1716, he received the title geheimeråd. This meant he was one of the King's closest and most trusted advisors.

Caspar Hausmann's Personal Life and Business

Caspar Hausmann married Karen Toller. Her father, Niels Toller, owned a lot of land and many sawmills in Norway. Her mother was the daughter of a wealthy assessor and broker. Because of this marriage, Hausmann gained control of a lot of valuable property.

Through his wife, he inherited the Old Bishop's Palace. This estate was also known as Oslo Ladegaard. He lived there until he died. As the owner of Oslo Ladegaard, he also controlled most of the land in the Old Town of Oslo. Another important property he gained was the Frogner Manor. After his death, this manor went to his daughter Karen. Hausmann also started an iron works called Eidsfos Verk in 1697.

He was also the fourth largest exporter of lumber. He owned large log booms on the Glomma river. This gave him control over much of the timber supply to Christiania. He used his own ships to export his lumber. He also imported goods like salt, wine, and liquor.

Caspar Hausmann had one son, Frederik Ferdinand Hausmann. Frederik was born in 1693 and died in 1757. He married Cathrine Helvig Werenskiold. However, they did not have any children. Because of this, the Hausmann family line ended with Frederik.
