Castillos is a small city in southeastern Uruguay. It is located in the Rocha Department. This city is known for its history and its location near beautiful natural areas.

Where is Castillos?
Castillos is found where two main roads meet: Route 9 and Route 16. It's about 56 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Rocha city.
Nearby towns include Barrio Torres, La Esmeralda, and Aguas Dulces. Castillos is in the eastern part of the Rocha Department. The land is mostly flat and close to the coast. It sits about 44 meters (144 feet) above sea level.
To the southwest of the city is Laguna de Castillos, a large lake. North of Castillos, you'll find the Cerro de los Rocha, a small hill.
A Look Back: Castillos' History
Castillos was founded a long time ago, on April 19, 1866. Its first name was "San Vicente de Castillos." This name came from a local chapel called San Vicente Mártir de Castillos.
Over the years, Castillos grew bigger.
- On May 3, 1909, it officially became a "Villa," which means a town.
- Later, on November 3, 1952, it was given the title of "Ciudad," meaning a city.
