History of Castine
How Castine Started
Castine was first planned out in 1832. It was then re-mapped the next year. Its spot was chosen because it was at an important crossroads. One road went between Greenville and Eaton. The other road connected communities in Miami County, Ohio and New Garden, Indiana.
Growth and Changes
For its first few decades, the village, which was known as "New Castine" back then, grew and did well. However, when the Little Miami Railroad was built through West Manchester, about 2 miles (3.2 km) south, Castine's growth slowed down. Things picked up again when the Cincinnati Northern Railroad was built in 1894. This helped the village connect to other places.
