Castle of Castielfabib facts for kids
The Castle of Castielfabib is an old castle located in the small village of Castielfabib, in the Valencia province of Spain. It sits in a special area called the Rincón de Ademuz.
A Look Back in Time
The area around the castle has been home to people for a very long time. Archaeologists have found signs of ancient groups like the Iberians and Romans here.
The Castle of Castielfabib likely started as an Arab fortress. In 1210, Peter II of Aragon, a king, captured it after a long fight. After this conquest, Peter II held important meetings called the General Corts of Aragon for three days. Later, the castle went back to Muslim control. But it was finally captured for good by another king, James I of Aragon.
During the 1300s, many wars happened between the Crown of Aragon and the Crown of Castile. This castle was very important because of its location. It was also used in later conflicts like the Spanish Independence War, the Carlist Wars, and the Spanish Civil War.
In 1835, during the First Carlist War, the castle was rebuilt. However, when the national army took control, they tore down these new parts.
What the Castle Looks Like Now
Today, you can still see many parts of the old castle in the village.
The main tower, called the keep, is now the local church of Our Lady of the Angels. It has been repaired recently. Inside this church, you can find old Gothic and Romanesque paintings. The church used to have many valuable items, but they were lost during the Spanish Civil War.
