The Castle of Tarifa (Spanish: Castillo de Tarifa) is an old castle in the coastal town of Tarifa, Spain. It's also known as the Castle of Guzmán el Bueno, named after a brave knight, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán. This castle has a long and interesting history, standing strong for over a thousand years!

A Look Back in Time

The Castle of Tarifa was built a very long time ago, in the year 960. It was ordered by Abd-ar-Rahman III, who was the leader of a large area called the Caliphate of Córdoba. This was a powerful kingdom in Spain during the Middle Ages.

The Story of Guzmán el Bueno

Later, in 1292, the town of Tarifa and its castle were taken over by Sancho IV of Castile, the King of Castile. The king gave the castle to Alonso Pérez de Guzmán to defend it.

In 1296, the castle was attacked by forces led by the king's rebellious brother, Infante Don Juan, and the Marinids. They tried to make Guzmán give up the castle. They even threatened to harm his son if he didn't surrender.

But Guzmán was incredibly brave and loyal to the king. He refused to hand over the castle, even to save his son's life. Because of his amazing courage and loyalty, he earned the nickname "el Bueno," which means "the Good."

Visiting the Castle Today

The Castle of Tarifa has been carefully restored. Today, you can visit this historic place and explore its towers. From the top, you can see amazing views of the coast and mountains of Morocco across the sea!
