Castries District is one of the ten main areas, called districts, in the beautiful Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. It's like a big county or region. In 2012, about 80,573 people lived here. This number has been slowly growing over the years. The capital city of Saint Lucia, also named Castries, is located right here! During the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival, the city of Castries hosts many music stages.

The Castries District has many smaller areas within it. The main town, also called Castries, is a busy port city. This means it has a big harbor where ships come and go.

Fun Things to Do in Castries

People love to visit Castries for many reasons.

  • Shopping: You can find lots of stores in the city. The Castries Market is a popular spot. Here, you can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and cool handmade crafts.
  • Art and History: The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a must-see. It has amazing murals painted by a local artist.
  • Relaxing Parks: You can relax in Derek Walcott Square. This park is named after a famous poet from Saint Lucia who won a Nobel Prize.
  • Amazing Views: Head up to Morne Fortune, which means "Hill of Good Luck." From the top, you get awesome views of the whole area. Long ago, the French and English fought battles here to control the island.
