Casuarina Square is the biggest shopping center in the Northern Territory of Australia. It's located in Casuarina, a suburb of Darwin. Discover Casuarina Square
Casuarina Square first opened its doors in 1974. It is the largest shopping center in the entire Northern Territory. This makes it a very important place for people in Darwin to shop and spend time.
Built for Strong Storms
The building was designed to handle powerful tropical cyclones. These are very strong storms that can sweep through the area. For example, Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin in 1974, the same year the mall opened. Because of this, Casuarina Square was built to special safety rules.
What You Can Find Inside
Today, Casuarina Square has over 180 different shops and businesses. You can find two big supermarkets, Coles and Woolworths. There are also large discount department stores like Big W and Kmart. If you want to watch a movie, there's a 7-screen BCC Cinemas.
Who Owns and Manages It
The GPT Group owns and manages Casuarina Square. They have been in charge since the beginning. Over the years, the shopping center has been updated four times. This means new parts have been added or old parts have been improved.
The most recent big update finished in December 1998. This added 63 new specialty stores and the 7-screen cinema. After this update, more people started visiting. In fact, the number of weekly visitors is now more than double the population of Darwin!
