A Look Back at Catawba's History
Long ago, before many people settled in Catawba, government surveyors explored the land. Surveyors are people who measure and map out areas. They help create detailed maps of the land.
Early Land Surveys
In 1847, the first surveyors walked through the area that would become Catawba. They used tools like a chain and a compass to measure the land. Later, in 1855, another group came to map all the smaller sections.
After their work, the surveyors wrote down what they saw. They described the northern part of Catawba as having many swamps with trees like Tamarack, White Cedar, and Alder. They noted that these swampy areas were not good for farming. The land was mostly flat, and the soil was not very rich. The main trees they found were Birch, Hemlock, Sugar Maple, Linden, Elm, and some Pine.
More Explorations
In 1858, another team of surveyors explored the southern part of Catawba. They also found many swamps with Tamarack, Cedar, and Spruce trees. They said these swamps were not good for farming or for getting useful timber.
The land was mostly flat, but some parts were rocky, especially near the river. The soil was generally okay, but some areas with maple trees had very good soil. The main trees here were Hemlock, Birch, Maple, Pine, Tamarack, and Cedar.
They also noticed a large area where trees had been blown down by a strong wind. Many of these fallen trees had rotted away. New trees like Poplar and Fir were growing in their place. The surveyors also described a deep and fast-flowing stream that ran through the area.
