The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a very important Catholic church in Colima, Mexico. It is also known as the Colima Cathedral. On October 12, 1998, Pope John Paul II gave it a special title: "Basilica Minor." This was a big deal because it was the first church in Latin America dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe to receive this honor.
You can find this beautiful church in the center of Colima City. It stands on one corner of the Libertad Garden.
History of the Colima Cathedral
The story of this cathedral goes way back to the year 1525. That's when the Spanish settlers first set aside this spot for a church and royal buildings.
Building the Oldest Cathedral
The original church was built using materials like adobe, brick, and stone. It even had gold decorations! It was finished in 1540. This makes it one of the oldest cathedrals in all of Mexico and North America. It has stood strong through many years, even surviving earthquakes.
