The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a very important Catholic church in Colima, Mexico. People also call it the Colima Cathedral. On October 12, 1998, Pope John Paul II gave it a special title: Basilica Minor. This was because it was the first church in Latin America dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. You can find this beautiful church in the center of Colima, right next to the Libertad Garden.
A Look Back: The Cathedral's History
This amazing building stands on the very spot where the Spanish settlers first planned their church and royal homes. Its story began way back in 1525, during the time when Spain ruled Mexico.
Building the Oldest Cathedral
The first church here was made from adobe, a type of sun-dried brick. It also had gold decorations, regular bricks, and stone. This strong building survived many challenges, including bad weather and earthquakes. It was finished in 1540. This makes it the oldest cathedral in both Mexico and North America!
