History of the Cathedral
When the Diocese of Superior was created in 1905, an older church called Sacred Heart became its first main church. It served this role until 1926.
Building the Cathedral (1926-1927)
Plans for building the Cathedral of Christ the King were announced in February 1926. Construction began on June 23, 1926. Bishop Joseph Pinten blessed the first stone of the new cathedral on October 24, 1926. He then moved to a new job in Michigan. The building work continued into 1927. The church was officially opened and dedicated on Christmas Day, 1927.
The people who would attend the new cathedral came from two older churches, Sacred Heart and St. Joseph. These two groups joined together to form the new cathedral parish.
Decorating the Interior (1937)
During the Great Depression, money was hard to find. This meant the inside of the cathedral was not fully decorated. In 1937, the church's pastor, Fr. Joseph Annabring, started a fundraising effort. Even with limited money, the church was able to decorate the walls and ceiling. They also added new pews, confessionals, and beautiful stained glass windows.
Growing the Parish (1946-1960)
As more people joined the church, the cathedral community grew. They added a parish hall in 1946. A rectory, which is a house for the priests, was built in 1948. In 1952, the church built a new school right across the street. A new convent, a home for nuns, was added in 1960.
Big Renovation (2003-2004)
The cathedral had a major renovation in 2003. The church building was closed for over a year for repairs. Workers fixed the outside and updated the inside. They added new frescoes, which are paintings on plaster. A new heating and air-conditioning system was also installed. The church reopened in late 2004. A special ceremony for the renovated cathedral was held in February 2005.
