The Cathedral Basilica of St. Anne is a very old and important church. It is located in Coro, Venezuela. It is also known by its Spanish name, Catedral Basílica Menor de Santa Ana de Coro.
The church was built after Pope Clement VII created the Diocese of Coro in 1531. Building work started in 1583. We don't know who first designed the church. It has a main area called a nave and two side areas called aisles.
The tall tower of the cathedral was started in 1620. The whole building was likely finished in 1634. This was almost 50 years after the decision to build it was made! Between 1608 and 1615, a person named Francisco Ramírez helped build the dome and two side arches. Then, in 1615, Nevada Bartolomé took over. He was very important for making sure the building work continued and was completed.
This cathedral was the most important building constructed before 1713. It set the style for how other churches in Venezuela would be built. This means it was a model for many other buildings in the country.
Protecting History: World Heritage Site
The city of Coro and a nearby town, La Vela de Coro, are very special. They were named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the 1990s. This is because they have many old and important buildings. The cathedral is part of this special area. It is in a "buffer zone" which helps protect the main historical parts.
However, in 2005, Coro was put on the List of World Heritage in Danger. This happened because heavy rains damaged parts of the city. By 2018, people were still working to fix the damage. They had made some progress to protect these historic places.
