Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George -- Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

The Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George is a beautiful church in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. It was designed by a special architect named the Very Reverend Philip Ruh in 1923. This cathedral is very important because it's the main church for the Ukrainian Catholic community in the area. It's where the Bishop has his official seat.

History of the Cathedral

The idea for the St. George Ukrainian Catholic Parish started a long time ago. On September 29, 1912, people had their first meeting. They chose their first leaders. In that same year, 40 people joined as members of the church.

Building the Church

The church building you see today is actually the second one for this parish. Construction began in 1939 and was finished in 1943. It's a very strong building made of stone. It stands on a tall concrete base. The church is about 104 feet long and 90 feet wide. Its cross-shaped arms are 30 feet wide.

The church's design is called a Byzantine-style basilica. It has a large central dome and six smaller domes. The main dome is octagonal, meaning it has eight sides. It gets light from eight arched windows. These windows help to light up the dome inside.

Art and Decorations

From 1950 to 1955, a member of the St. George's parish, Theodore Baran, created the beautiful icons and other art inside the church. An Iconostasis was added in 1991. An iconostasis is a special wall of icons and religious paintings. It separates the main part of the church from the altar.

Many important religious leaders have visited the cathedral over the years. These visitors include clergy from the Ukrainian and Roman Catholic Churches, as well as other Christian churches.

Clergy and Leadership

The clergy are the religious leaders who serve the church. They lead services and help the community.

Past and Present Priests

From 1992 to 2010, the main priest for the parish was Rt. Rev. Vladimir Mudri. Currently, the Parish Priest is Rev. Ivan Nahachewski. These priests guide the church members and lead worship.
