The Cathedral of the Incarnation is a special church called a cathedral in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States. It belongs to the Episcopal Church. A cathedral is the main church for a diocese, which is like a church district. In 2020, about 721 people were members, and around 227 people attended services regularly.

History of the Cathedral

Discussions about building a main church for the Diocese of Maryland started a long time ago. These talks began when William Paret was the bishop, from 1885 to 1911. However, the cathedral was actually built when John Gardner Murray was the bishop.

Early Construction and Use

The first building constructed for the church complex was called the Synod Hall. The church community started meeting in the lower part of this building in 1911. The first stone for the Synod Hall was placed in 1920. The first worship service in the new space happened in 1932.

Becoming a Cathedral

Originally, there were plans for a much larger cathedral complex. But these plans were later changed. The Synod Hall itself was then chosen to be the main cathedral. For the first 35 years, it was known as a "pro-cathedral," meaning it was a temporary main church.

In 1943, the Cathedral of the Incarnation was first used for an important ceremony. This was when the ninth Bishop of Maryland, Noble C. Powell, was officially installed. The church's building debt was paid off, and on February 1, 1955, the Diocese of Maryland officially made it the Cathedral of the Incarnation. It was formally dedicated on November 6, 1955.

Cathedral House

The Cathedral House was built in 1967. This building holds offices, rooms for meetings, and classrooms for Sunday School.
