History of the Cathedral
The Sacred Heart church community started in 1952. It was formed by joining two older church communities: St. Thomas and St. Joseph. These two churches were only four blocks apart in Winona.
St. Thomas Parish
St. Thomas was the first church community in Winona, started in 1857. The first bishop of Minnesota, Joseph Cretin, had led a Mass there the year before. He sent Father Thomas Murray to organize the church.
St. Thomas church had two buildings over time. The second one was finished in the early 1870s. This church became a "pro-cathedral" when the Diocese of Winona was created in 1889. A "pro-cathedral" is a church that serves as a temporary cathedral. Its pastor, Joseph Bernard Cotter, became the first bishop of Winona.
St. Joseph Parish
The St. Joseph church community began in 1862. It was created to serve the German Catholic people in Winona. St. Joseph also had two church buildings. The second one was completed in the early 1880s.
Building the New Cathedral
As the diocese grew, people realized that the St. Thomas church building was not big enough to be a proper cathedral. So, in 1944, a plan began to raise money for a new, larger cathedral.
On June 15, 1950, the Holy See (the main authority of the Catholic Church in Rome) approved the idea to combine the St. Thomas and St. Joseph churches. When they merged, St. Thomas had about 600 families, and St. Joseph had more than 300 families. The new Sacred Heart church community was officially formed in 1952. This is when the current cathedral building was finished.
Later, the Sacred Heart church and St. Casimir church communities were grouped together. St. Casimir's was founded in 1905. It started from the St. Stanislaus Kostka church community.
