Catherine of Castile (born 5 October 1422, died 17 September 1424) was a very young princess. She was the Princess of Asturias and the person expected to become queen of Castile from the moment she was born.

Catherine of Castile

Catherine was born on October 5, 1422, in a town called Illescas, Toledo. She was the first child of King John II of Castile and his first wife, Queen Maria of Aragon.

Early Life and Royal Title

Catherine was named after important women in her family. These included her aunt, the Duchess of Villena, and her grandmother, Catherine of Lancaster.

Because she was the first child of the king, Catherine immediately became the heiress presumptive to the throne of Castile. This means she was next in line to be queen.

On January 1, 1423, the Cortes of Toledo formally recognized her. The Cortes was like a parliament or a special meeting of important people. They officially swore her in as the Princess of Asturias. This was her official title as the future ruler.

A Short Life

Sadly, Princess Catherine did not live for very long. She passed away on September 17, 1424, in Madrigal de las Altas Torres. She was less than two years old.

After her death, her younger sister, Infanta Eleanor, became the new heiress. Eleanor then took on the title of Princess of Asturias.

Princess Catherine is buried in the Miraflores Charterhouse. This is a special monastery where her father, King John II, and his second wife, Isabella of Portugal, are also buried.
