Maria of Aragon was an important queen in the history of Spain. She was born on February 24, 1403, and passed away on February 18, 1445. Maria became the Queen of Castile when she married King John II in 1420. She was his first wife. Her parents were Ferdinand I of Aragon and Eleanor of Alburquerque.
Maria's Life as Queen
Maria's brother helped arrange her marriage. He wanted his family to have power in both Castile and Aragon. Their wedding was simple. Maria sometimes got involved in politics to help her brothers, who were princes of Aragon. She often supported her brothers' plans, even if they were different from her husband's. This sometimes made her relationship with King John II a bit difficult.
Maria passed away on February 18, 1445. After her death, King John II married Isabella of Portugal. They later became the parents of the famous Queen Isabella I of Castile. Maria of Aragon does not have any descendants alive today. Her family line ended a few decades after she died.
Maria's Children
Maria and King John II of Castile had four children:
- Catherine, Princess of Asturias (born October 5, 1422 – died September 17, 1424).
- Eleanor, Princess of Asturias (born September 10, 1423 – died August 22, 1425).
- Henry IV of Castile (born January 5, 1425 – died December 11, 1474). He became king after his father. Henry first married Blanche II of Navarre and later Joan of Portugal.
- Infanta Maria (born around 1428 – died around 1429).
