About Catherine Gaskin

Catherine Gaskin was born in Dundalk Bay, County Louth, Ireland, in 1929. When she was just three months old, her family moved to Australia. They settled in Coogee, a suburb of Sydney, where Catherine grew up.

She started writing very young. Her first novel, This Other Eden, was written when she was only 15 years old! It was published two years later. After her second book, With Every Year, came out, she moved to London. There, she wrote three more best-selling books: Dust in Sunlight (1950), All Else is Folly (1951), and Daughter of the House (1952).

Catherine Gaskin's most famous book is Sara Dane. She finished writing it on her 25th birthday in 1954, and it was published in 1955. This book was a huge success! It sold over 2 million copies and was translated into many different languages. Later, in 1982, it was even made into a television mini-series in Australia. The story of Sara Dane is based on the real life of an Australian businesswoman named Mary Reibey. Mary Reibey's picture has been on the Australian $20 note since 1994.

Catherine Gaskin wrote other popular novels too, like A Falcon for a Queen (1972) and The Summer of the Spanish Woman (1977).

After marrying an American citizen, Catherine lived in Manhattan for ten years. She then moved to the Virgin Islands. In 1967, she moved to Ireland and became an Irish citizen. She also lived on the Isle of Man. Her last novel was The Charmed Circle (1988). Catherine Gaskin later returned to Sydney, Australia, where she passed away in September 2009 at the age of 80.
