History of Catherine Street
Catherine Street wasn't always called that! It was first laid out in the 1630s by Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford. Back then, the southern part of the street was blocked by a garden wall and the back of an inn.
How Catherine Street Got Its Name
The southern part of the street was named Catherine Street after Queen Catherine of Braganza. She was the wife of King Charles II.
The northern part of the street had a different name: Brydges Street. This was named after the fourth Earl of Bedford's wife. In 1872, both parts were officially joined and named Catherine Street, as we know it today.
