The Catlin Court Historic District is a special neighborhood in Glendale, Arizona. It was created in 1914. This area is important because it shows how Glendale grew a long time ago. It's like a living museum of old homes and history.

Glendale's Early Days

Glendale was started by William John Murphy in 1892. It officially became a town in 1910. At first, Glendale's economy relied on farming. Farmers grew many crops in the area.

How Glendale Grew

A big change happened in 1902. A Beet Sugar Factory was built in town. This factory helped Glendale grow a lot. More people moved to Glendale for jobs. This created a need for new homes.

Creating Catlin Court

Businessmen saw a chance to build more houses. Lafayette Myers, who was the president of Glendale State Bank, was one of them. Otto R. Hansen, a businessman from Wisconsin, was another. In 1914, Hansen divided his land into lots for homes. He named this new area "Catlin Court." He named it after his wife's maiden name.

Myers and A.A. Carrick, another local businessman, started a real estate company. They helped sell the lots in Catlin Court. This made Catlin Court the first planned neighborhood in Glendale. It was a big step for the city's growth.

Homes in Catlin Court

Most of the homes in Catlin Court are built in the bungalow style. Bungalows are cozy, often one-story houses. They usually have a wide front porch. You can still see many original bungalows here. Some famous ones include the Otto R. Hansen House and the C.M. Wood House.

The Catlin Court Historic District is found between Gardenia Avenue, 59th Avenue, Palmarie Avenue, and 58th Avenue. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 9, 1992. This means it's officially recognized as an important historical place. It was the first of ten districts in Glendale to get this special historical title.
