Catlins Ranges facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Catlins Ranges are a group of rugged hills in the southeastern part of New Zealand's South Island. These hills are mostly found in the Otago region. Some parts also stretch into the Southland region. They are known for their wild beauty and are a key feature of the area called the Catlins.

How the Catlins Ranges Got Their Name

The Catlins Ranges are named after the wider Catlins area. This name comes from Edward Cattlin, a whaling captain. In 1840, he tried to buy a large piece of land near the Catlins River. He made this purchase from a Māori chief named Hone Tūhawaiki. Even though the land deal didn't officially go through, Edward Cattlin's name became linked to this beautiful part of New Zealand.

Where Are the Catlins Ranges?

These ranges are located in the very southeastern corner of New Zealand's South Island. They run in a general northwest-southeast direction. Most of the ranges are within the Otago region. However, their western edges reach into the Southland region.

Parts of the Catlins Ranges

The Catlins Ranges are made up of four main sections. These sections are like separate hill chains.

  • The Rata Range
  • The Beresford Range
  • The Maclennan Range
  • The Forest Range

The Rata and Beresford Ranges are smaller and are in the northeast. The Maclennan Range is the largest. The Forest Range is often seen as an extension of the Maclennan Range. Valleys with rivers like the Catlins River and Tahakopa River separate these ranges. As you go further inland, the different ranges blend together. This is why they are often called by one name, the Catlins Ranges.

Highest Points in the Ranges

The Maclennan Range is the longest of the four. It stretches for about 25 kilometers (15 miles). The highest hills are usually found inland. This is where the ranges become less distinct from each other.

The highest point in the entire Catlins Ranges is Mount Pye. It stands tall at 720 meters (2,361 feet). Mount Pye is located about 25 kilometers (40 miles) north-northeast of Waikawa. Other important peaks include:

  • Mount Rosebery (719 meters or 2,359 feet)
  • Ajax Hill (698 meters or 2,290 feet)
  • Catlins Cone (698 meters or 2,290 feet)
  • Mount Tautuku (691 meters or 2,266 feet)
