What is the History of Catt Hall?

Early Days as Agriculture Hall

This building was first known as Agriculture Hall. It was completed in 1893. Back then, it held departments like Agriculture and Veterinary Science. In the early 1900s, the Agricultural Engineering department moved in. The building was then called the Agricultural Engineering Building. This name lasted until 1922.

George Washington Carver's Laboratory

A famous scientist, George Washington Carver, once had a laboratory in this building. He was the first African American graduate student at Iowa State. He was also the first African American faculty member.

Renaming and Renovation

After 1922, the building was renamed Botany Hall. Later, it became Old Botany Hall. This was after the Botany department moved to a different building in 1968. Even though the building was thought to be unsafe in 1966, parts of it were still used until 1994.

In 1985, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site. The inside of the building was completely rebuilt. This big renovation cost $5 million. In 1995, the building was officially renamed Carrie Chapman Catt Hall. It then became the main office for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
